A Shadowbind is a rare ability where the shadow binds a magical font to act as the medium for casting a very unique spell. Rather than using prepared spell cards or scrolls, the individual’s shadow or subconscious performs Curl work to create an internal casting medium that enables a highly specific magical ability.

Shadowbinds are distinct from traditional magic preparation and can develop through various means including birth, trauma, key life events, or extreme desire. They are not inherently divine magic - regular ShadowBinds do not produce fractalizing patterns as they originate from the individual’s own psyche.

ShadowBinds explain traditional magical archetypes in Hanaq:

  • Sorcerer bloodlines: An ancient relative’s extreme desire for magical power created a Shadowbind that manifests throughout their lineage gaining the ability to cast certain spells.
  • Witch patrons: The “patron” is actually a tulpic-type ShadowBind created by the individual’s psyche

Types

Entity Type

Creates a distinct manifestation that emerges from the user’s cast shadow, with damage to the entity affecting its host. Can manifest as:

  • Tulpic: Independent animated manifestations that may have personalities of their own
  • Bound Objects: Physical items that can reform when destroyed at the cost of tremendous exhaustion to the user
  • Both subtypes can potentially develop automatic behaviors

Known examples include:

  • Ping Wing’s ornate shadow hippogriff that aids in combat
  • Phoebe’s puppet-like doll that creates water-attracted strings

Evocation Type

Manipulates the user’s actual cast shadow and focuses on unique effects, requiring at least somatic gestures and line of sight. Examples include:

  • Stussy’s shadow hands that influence others’ confidence levels
  • Hunts’ ability to grab and detach or reattach the living body parts of himself and others while essential functions remain intact

Mutation Type

The user’s shadow fundamentally alters their physical properties, often preceded by their cast shadow mutating a second before they do. Examples include:

  • Vida’s liquid form
  • Ankara’s half snake physiology
